Friul Mosaic and the largest Marian Sanctuary in the world

Friul Mosaic and the largest Marian Sanctuary in the world

Two thousand square meters of surface to be covered. 1,600 hours for the design and sectioning of the sheets. 280 hours for the design. 12 thousand hours for the processing. 14 thousand sheets of mosaic made. These are the incredible numbers achieved by Friul Mosaic for the creation of a grandiose work. The company was in fact chosen to create the mosaics of the large dome of the Santuario Nacional Nossa Senhora de Conceiçao Aparecida in São Paulo, Brazil.

With over 18 thousand square meters of covered surface, the one in Aparecida is the largest Marian sanctuary in the world and can hold up to 70 thousand faithful. The sanctuary, the annual seat of the Synod of Brazilian Bishops, represents the meeting point for all the churches of South America and has already enjoyed three papal visits.

Friul Mosaic’s intervention involved the dome covered with enamel and gold mosaics (strictly Italian, supplied by the Orsoni company of Venice) that interpret the works of the Brazilian artist Claudio Pastro. The Aparecida mosaic has continuously involved 8 people including mosaicists, designers and installers since 2012.

“The Brazilian acquisition is the result of application, determination and great commitment on our part to maintain constant, on a large scale, the standards of excellence that distinguish us,” said Barbara Bertoia, CEO of the company. “The sanctuary of Aparecida,” she added, “represents an important icon for all of Catholic South America and, thanks to us, will bring the Made in Italy brand to its dome.”

Ephemeral Waves, a new collaboration for Friul Mosaic and Marco Gallotta

Ephemeral Waves, a new collaboration for Friul Mosaic and Marco Gallotta

Friul Mosaic continues its collaboration with Marco Gallotta, an artist of Italian origin who has been working in New York for almost 25 years, a city from which he draws strong inspiration for his works that originate from paper-cutting, drawing, painting and printing techniques, for which he is recognized throughout the world.

The artist’s collaboration with the artisan company, a true icon of contemporary mosaic art, began in 2022 and is renewed this year with the creation of Ephemeral Waves, a mosaic artwork that stands out for its play of contrasts to evoke the fluid and transitory nature of water. The work was presented at the Monaco Yacht Show 2024, an event of excellence for the world of luxury, which showcases the best of the nautical industry and its excellence.

The project uses cutouts and negative spaces strategically to create a sense of movement and lightness, mirroring the way water shapes and takes shape from the environment in which it flows. The work recreates both a visual and emotional representation of the aquatic element from which life originates and manages to capture its essence through the skillful use of space, light, color and movement.

Created in collaboration with the artisans of Friul Mosaic, this work of art uses precious handmade Venetian enamels, positioned on a metal base, to give life to a mosaic that with its visual strength recalls an emotional experience. Ephemeral Waves merges Gallotta’s artistic sensibility with the Friulian artisan tradition, creating a harmonious dialogue between innovation and craftsmanship.

Contemporary Mosaics for a Dream Residence in the Balearics

Contemporary Mosaics for a Dream Residence in the Balearics

In Mallorca, architects Nespoli and Novara chose Friul Mosaic’s mosaic creations to cover the interiors and exteriors of a villa immersed in nature
Emerging in an environment dominated by the splendor of nature was not easy. Thanks to the refined contemporary mosaics by Friul Mosaic chosen to cover interior and exterior spaces, architects Nespoli and Novara succeeded in the feat by eliminating the boundaries between inside and outside.
The heart of this adventure is a villa located on a hill in the hinterland of Mallorca, with the Mediterranean on the horizon and greenery all around. In this earthly paradise, the Seregno (MB) studio created a luxurious summer residence literally open to the surrounding landscape, with a large and elegant patio that, with its small and refined swimming pool, ideally acts as a point of contact with the surrounding nature and the sea just a little further away. The residence is dominated by neutral colors, perfectly integrated with the color palette of the region, while the leitmotif of the design choice is represented by the coexistence and dialogue between classic and contemporary.

A perfect example of this meeting of shades and styles, of ancient wisdom and timeless taste are the contemporary mosaics chosen to cover the surfaces of the entire villa, both in the open and closed spaces, which are thus ideally connected. All designed by Friul Mosaic, excellence in the production of strictly artisanal mosaics, the coverings chosen by the Lombard designers range from some of the most fascinating lines of the artisans of San Martino al Tagliamento (PN).

Hexagons, a perfect balance between classic and modern

One of the proposals from the Contemporaneo collection of the Friulian company was used to cover the interior of the small but refined swimming pool. This is the Esagoni line, chosen in the Nero Marquina and Carrara variants and perfect, like the other compositions in the collection, in reproposing the essential forms of classic and contemporary taste with textures marked by clear chromatic transitions.

Tessere, for contemporary mosaics that become fabrics

Entering the villa, the living area has instead been covered with the compositions of the Traccia line. Here, chosen in the Bianco Thassos, Carrara and Nero Marquina variants, these mosaics belong to the Tessere collection created by the designer and architect Luisa Bocchietto. Certainly not by chance, the name of this collection is intended to recall both the sense of making, namely weaving, and the final product, made up of the tiles of a new mosaic.

The result of an in-depth study of fabrics and weaves in their construction and formal composition, Tessere represents the synthesis between mosaic art and ancient textile art, a union that gives rise to a collection of surfaces that are handcrafted from every point of view. In fact, it is a collection inspired by the world of historic fabrics from the Biella-based company Piacenza1733, a leader in the processing of top-quality yarns from whose archive the 7 patterns that characterize the mosaic decorations were taken.

Rete, overlapping mesh geometries
Going out again into the outdoor spaces of the Majorcan villa, we encounter other surfaces covered with Friul Mosaic creations. This is the case of Rete, a line from the Contemporaneo catalogue that comes to life from the meeting of geometries, giving rise to a network of overlapping meshes. Chosen in the Bianco Thassos, Carrara and Nero Marquina variants, these coverings decorate the terraces of the villa in the east wing intended for guests.

The fabulous house designed by Nespoli and Novara is one of the cases in which Friul Mosaic’s ability to combine tradition and innovation has found its maximum expression. An example of the evolution of mosaic art, the Friulian company relies on its work rigorously carried out by hand using the traditional hammer by expert craftsmen from the prestigious School of Mosaicists in Spilimbergo (PN), a world-famous training center.

Friul Mosaic, a tradition of artisan excellence
Founded in 1987 by Master mosaicist William Bertoia, Friul Mosaic is now active in both the residential and hospitality sectors, collaborating with numerous architectural studios, interior designers and designers around the world, as well as with important international fashion brands, who have brought the beauty of these contemporary mosaics into their boutiques.
There is also no shortage of forays into the field of religious architecture, as demonstrated by the important work on the mosaic covering of the great basilica of Aparecida, in the state of São Paulo in Brazil, which lasted two years and was completed in October 2015. Other collaborations include several Dolce&Gabbana stores around the world, as well as work on exclusive hotels in Italy and abroad, including the Cipriani in Milan, the historic Hotel de Paris in Monte Carlo, and the extremely elegant Hotel Bulgari in Rome, which opened in 2023.

William Bertoia: The Tradition of Artistic Mosaic at the Service of Innovation

William Bertoia: The Tradition of Artistic Mosaic at the Service of Innovation

Friul Mosaic is a family-run artisan company of artistic mosaics, founded by William Bertoia in 1987, which draws on an important tradition, but with an eye on contemporaneity: starting from the design, for which innovative motifs and original compositions are sought, each mosaic is made by hand, tile after tile, respecting the traditional techniques of classic mosaic. Wall mosaic decorations, floor coverings, artistic and architectural solutions are all made strictly to measure, with mastery, rigor and sartorial precision, without forgetting creativity and innovation. In addition to the classic motifs, original and modern textures are proposed, inspired by nature, works of art and myth, but also by modern mosaic as an element of interior design. In 2020, William Bertoia obtained the title MAM – Maestro d’Arte e Mestiere, recognized by the Fondazione Cologni dei Mestieri d’Arte.

What was your path and how did you start this job? My path as a mosaicist began when I was a child, with the discovery of a bag of marble tiles belonging to my grandfather, a mosaic terracer since the early 1900s. I then attended and graduated from the Scuola Mosaicisti del Friuli in Spilimbergo. I started working in the laboratories of the marble workers in the area and then, in 1981, I opened my own company.

Friuli is an area recognized throughout the world for artistic mosaic. How important was the connection with the territory for your work? Mosaic arrived in Friuli Venezia Giulia already during the Roman Empire in the city of Aquileia. Here it was then transformed from decorative art, for private homes and public spaces, to sacred art for the decoration of the basilica in the early Christian period. Mosaic is also present in the Byzantine period (of which we have an example in the apse of the cathedral of San Giusto in Trieste), its workers then formed the basis for the laboratories of Venice during the birth of the corporations. When the corporation of terrazzo and mosaic workers was founded, it appears that many workers in this art were Friulians.
After the fall of the Venetian Republic, the Friulian artisans, with the closure of almost all the laboratories, spread to the major European cities of the time. They opened laboratories in Paris, Copenhagen, Berlin. The ties with the land of origin remained alive, however, and this led to the creation of the Spilimbergo School. Here the various styles are taught: Roman, Byzantine, Renaissance and contemporary; direct and indirect work, the latter entering the world of mosaic around 1860.
This work allows the work to be carried out in the laboratory, of any type of size and decoration required, whether ancient or modern and of any size.
When a large order comes along, we seek the collaboration of other laboratories in the area whose work we know, because, at the end of the work, the execution must be homogeneous, as if done by a single hand. Friul Mosaic, which I founded in 1987, includes almost all mosaicists graduated from the School of Spilimbergo, where I finished my studies in 1961. Natalina, one of my first collaborators, now runs the laboratory. My daughters, sons-in-law and first grandson, operate according to their skills within the company; production and installation of the mosaic for the males, who learned this art in the laboratory and by working alongside me on various construction sites in Italy and abroad. My daughters Barbara and Tiziana, take care of the relationship with customers, with architects, organize participation in fairs and draw up estimates. They have now thirty years of experience; Barbara has a degree in Economics and Commerce and Tiziana has a diploma as a Business Expert corresponding in foreign languages. They have “breathed” mosaic since they were little, deciding, once they finished their studies, to enter the family business, which requires people who know how to promote, lead and administer the work of about thirty people.
His works are true masterpieces of mosaic decoration, some of considerable size. How do you organize your work? Do you have collaborators who assist you? The work of the mosaic artist begins with the preparation of the design and the choice of materials to be used to create the mosaic. Then the tasks are distributed to the laboratory staff: cutting the materials, gluing the tiles, checking the dry work, then packing and shipping. Finally, an inspection of the construction site and verification of the surfaces intended for installation, finally installation of the mosaic. The company is made up of mosaic artists, personnel responsible for cutting the marble to produce the tiles, technical designers, administrative staff, and promotion and marketing personnel.

How many hours of work does the creation of a large work require? The creation of a work depends on several factors: type of decoration, type of materials (which can be for example marble, vitreous enamel or others), size of the tiles and size of the work. It can take from four hours per square meter for the simplest surfaces to well over 100 hours per square meter for micromosaic with minute and complex decorations.

What are your favorite styles and techniques? As a mosaic artist I have no style preferences, certainly the more complex creations leave a more vivid memory.

Who are the clients of your works and what has been the most interesting work you have done so far? The clients are of various kinds and follow all the phases of placing the mosaic. They can be religious institutions for which we create sacred art mosaics, owners of shops, hotels, private villas for which we create walkable surfaces or walls decorated in mosaic, swimming pools and wellness areas, floors of halls, entrances and rooms; public bodies for mosaic surfaces with decorations of subjects or representative themes, but also designers and marble workers. For me, the most interesting work, among the many created, can be considered, for its prestige and size, the covering of the dome of the National Sanctuary of Nossa Señora Aparecida: over 2000 square meters of enamels and gold for the largest basilica in the world, dedicated to the Madonna, which welcomes 13 million pilgrims a year. However, the projects we have created for major fashion brands, such as Dolce & Gabbana, Marni, and others that I cannot mention for confidentiality reasons, are very important.

How important is, in your opinion, the transmission of artisan knowledge to the new generations? Experience, knowledge and passion for one’s craft can be useful for the education of the new generations. Care and love for art and for lasting beauty have a positive impact on coexistence and civil awareness. The masterpieces handed down to us over the centuries are evidence of the work of artists and artisans of the past. The same can be true in our case: mosaics produced in recent years will be witnesses for centuries to our ability to create and produce works of art.

What are your plans for the future of the business? Personally, I think of a short-term future, being 80 years old. I would like to conclude my activity as a mosaic artist with a personal anthological exhibition. A review of works ranging from sacred art in Byzantine style to the translation into mosaic of famous works by Impressionists, ending with compositions of contemporary mosaics. About fifteen works to be exhibited in some city, to make this art better known and appreciated. For Friul Mosaic, founded by me in 1987, now managed by my daughters Barbara and Tiziana, by the laboratory manager Natalina and by the nephew Nicola for marketing, the future seems to be on an excellent path. There is no shortage of projects, the work is proceeding well and barring pandemics or other calamities, our presence in the sector will continue to be active and rewarding.

Luisa Bocchietto for Friul Mosaic: how the “Tessere” project was born and lives

Luisa Bocchietto for Friul Mosaic: how the “Tessere” project was born and lives

The collection refers to the fundamental element of every mosaic, namely the tesserae, 10 mm thick, hand-cut with a hammer by craftsmen and arranged to form compositions that are always unique and unrepeatable.

TESSERE is the title of the Collection created by Luisa Bocchietto for Friul Mosaic, whose name corresponds both to a process, namely weaving, and to the final product, made up of the tesserae of a new mosaic. The project starts from the idea of exploring the traditional world of weaving through the history of Biella entrepreneurship, an area in which an important production of excellence has developed and the territory from which the designer comes.

Tradition becomes a common ground through which to compare two productions of excellence, fabric and mosaic, which start from artisan mastery, from manual skills applied to production, from experience handed down over time; elements that today translate into products that are only partially industrializable, but contemporary and full of charm. Bocchietto did not want to start from the image of the fabric, as we see it reproduced in many decorative surface declinations, but rather to delve deeply into the process of fabric construction to better understand its formal composition.

Inspired by the art of weaving, an expression of craftsmanship and creativity, TESSERE is particularly representative for FRIUL MOSAIC because it maintains its artisanal and unique characteristics, and is able to convey new suggestions that come not from the use of formal patterns but from the application of sedimented processes that have a deeper reason to exist. The collection refers to the fundamental element of every mosaic, namely the tesserae, 10 mm thick, hand-cut with a hammer by craftsmen and arranged in such a way as to form compositions that are always unique and unrepeatable. The final product becomes a competitive and contemporary solution, which encompasses aesthetic quality at an accessible cost in the different versions for large spaces and for smaller-scale spaces.

Marco Gallotta for Friul Mosaic

“Ephemeral Waves” by Marco Gallotta Italian-born, New York-based artist Marco Gallotta presents “Ephemeral Waves,” a mosaic work that captures the fluid and ever-changing essence of water. Through a clever play of positive and negative spaces, Gallotta creates a mosaic that evokes the natural movement of water, masterfully using light and color to reflect the ever-changing environment.

Created in collaboration with the artisans of Friul Mosaic, this work of art uses precious, hand-made Venetian enamels, positioned on a metal base, to create a mosaic that is not only a visual representation, but also an emotional experience. “Onde Effimere” fuses Gallotta’s artistic sensibility with the Friulian artisan tradition, creating a harmonious dialogue between innovation and craftsmanship.

Friul Mosaic and the collaboration with Theo Vanderzalm
The artist Theo Vanderzalm, originally from Australia and living in London, presents the work “Sedimentary”, a mosaic that explores the depths of the earth through a unique mix of advanced technologies and ancient artisanal techniques. The work, created in 2023, takes inspiration from images generated by artificial intelligence that represent the sedimentary layers of the soil, subsequently translated into mosaic thanks to the extraordinary skill of the artisans of Friul Mosaic. For this work, marble, stone, glass and precious Brazilian quartz were used, creating a stratification that evolves from a smooth finish to a rougher texture, revealing the authentic beauty of the material. The result of this collaboration is a work that expresses the three-dimensionality of deep matter, starting from a graphic matrix generated by the extraction of computer data, translated and interpreted by the hand of man in a unique mosaic work. “Sedimentary” is a reflection on the harmony between technological innovation and artistic tradition.
Friul Mosaic: tradition and cutting-edge innovation
Founded in 1987, Friul Mosaic represents the perfect balance between tradition and innovation in the mosaic art scene. The company, based in San Martino al Tagliamento, stands out for the extremely high quality of its creations, handcrafted by expert craftsmen from the famous Friuli Mosaic School in Spilimbergo. Custom Mosaics for an Exclusive Roman Hotel - Friul Mosaic

Custom Mosaics for an Exclusive Roman Hotel

The bathrooms of the Bulgari Hotel in Rome are dressed in beauty with mosaics created by the company Friul Mosaic Friuli-Venezia Giulia is one of the richest territories in mosaic works: over four hundred have been recorded (not counting the Roman floors and the UNESCO heritage sites of Aquileia). A thousand-year-old tradition, which has also been maintained over time and resulted in the foundation, in 1922, of the Scuola Mosaicisti del Friuli in Spilimbergo. In this territory rich in artisanal knowledge, in 1987 the master mosaicist William Bertoia founded Friul Mosaic together with two partners, a company specialized in the creation of custom mosaics that includes among its excellent collaborations those with the Caffè Contarena in Udine, the Grand Hotel Duchi d’Aosta in Trieste and the Grand Hotel des Iles Borromées in Stresa.

These and other important collaborations of Friul Mosaic are now joined by the commission for the exclusive Bulgari Hotel in Rome, the ninth hotel in the Bulgari Hotels & Resorts collection and the second in Italy.

A celebration of the beauties of the eternal city
The Bulgari Hotel is located in Piazza Augusto Imperatore, a few steps from Via del Corso, Piazza di Spagna and the famous Bulgari store on Via Condotti, and celebrates the most appreciated qualities of the eternal city with the design and art of our country.

It is housed in an imposing building from the 1940s renovated by the ACPV ARCHITECTS Antonio Citterio Patricia Viel studio. Today, in its 14,000 square meters, the hotel hosts 114 rooms and suites, which recall the Roman and Mediterranean roots of the Bulgari fashion house and stand out for their attention to detail capable of providing guests with a unique experience of luxury and well-being.

The excellence of Friul Mosaic at work
The bathrooms of the suites have been decorated with marbles in four color palettes, enriched with mosaic rosettes.
The creation of the custom mosaics was carried out by Friul Mosaic, whose artisans, trained at the Mosaic School of Spilimbergo, worked with rigor and sartorial precision, applying the indirect technique of reversing on paper to create exclusive designs. Each tile of the custom mosaics was created by breaking the various stones one by one, following the artisanal tradition that distinguishes their work.

The result is that the bathrooms of the Hotel Bulgari host true works of mosaic art, an expression of an excellence that has been able to gather an artisanal legacy and transposed it into a modern context without affecting its splendor.

Tradition and innovation for custom mosaics requested all over the world
Friul Mosaic, born “on the banks” of the Tagliamento, is today an international point of reference for the creation of traditional and custom design mosaics. It operates in the residential, hospitality, retail and wellness sectors, with a team of architects who assist the customer in the design phase and a team of mosaicists able to create unique and customized works entirely by hand, using traditional tools such as the hammer.

Éclats, splinters and flashes of art - Friul Mosaic

Éclats, splinters and flashes of art

«Éclats is a French name with two meanings: on the one hand, splinter, the fragment of glass that makes up the image; on the other, flash, or the brilliance of the texture that makes up the mosaic». The architect and designer Fabio Ferrillo Belli thus highlighted what led him to choose Éclats as the name of his new collection for the company and custom mosaic laboratory Friul Mosaic, a project truly capable of transmitting the profound meaning of a mosaic: not a simple set of tiles, but a true amalgam of fantasy, creativity, passion, technique, material and taste.

The contents of this series of mosaic art are in fact current, enhanced by an iconographic, technical and chromatic language that is absolutely contemporary, modern, experimental. This collection was conceived «around three evocative, contemporary and original themes – underlined Ferrillo Belli –, nine subjects, 27 variations and infinite possibilities. Each theme has been conceived in two different declinations and can be intended for the contract, wellness and residential worlds.

The first declination is two-dimensional, more traditional, linked to the support; the second more contemporary, innovative and three-dimensional, in which some details of the subject come to life by detaching themselves from the wall”. The protagonist, then, is the color, thanks to a palette of Venetian enamels chosen and created specifically for Éclats: each pattern can be declined in the full range of shades but, at the same time, also in black and white.

The themes of ÈCLATS
Flying Creatures, Tropical Jungle and Tribute to Milan are the three themes of Éclats developed by Fabio Ferrillo Belli for this new collection of Friul Mosaic. Flying creatures have always fascinated the designer by virtue of their lightness, fragility but also the particularity of their wings. The latter are «perfect structures – is Ferrillo Belli’s description – yet geometrically almost casual, unrepeatable, composed of tiny differences, which speak the same language as the mosaics of Friul Mosaic and the hands of the artisans who compose them». The iconographic power of the plant world, in particular of the tropical jungle, lies in its connected symbolic contents evocative of the same intricate structure of the leaves: this, in turn, refers to the deepest essence of nature, elusive, powerful and at the same time to the fragility of the ecosystem that populates it.
Finally, the tribute to Milan: «A tribute to the city, to some of its most representative architectures because – added the designer – I believe they deeply express its identity, collect its contents and return them, through the time of history, in an orderly, clear, representative way, as if they wanted to talk about those who, by choice or by chance, built, family after family, that society that makes the city so incredibly alive».

Experimentation, eco-sustainability and customization
The values of experimentation, eco-sustainability and customization were placed at the base of the collaboration between Friul Mosaic and Ferrillo Belli, therefore also the valorization of the artistic and artisanal skills of the artists. The experimental vein with which we approached the creation of Éclats has therefore led to compositions that are true works of art, scenographic backdrops and precious flexible coverings, so much so that they can be suitable for sophisticated environments of hotels, restaurants or spas, but also for more private areas of yachts or homes: the shards of precious colored enamels, collected in panels and special supports, detach from the wall, reaching new locations. In keeping with the sustainable philosophy shared by the company and the designer, the collection can be considered completely eco-sustainable: the colored fragments are obtained from recycled glass which, combined with natural pigments, undergo a low-temperature sintering process, free of emissions into the atmosphere and toxic substances. The supports are made of recycled or completely recyclable materials, such as aluminum and innovative plant fibers, and even the installation materials are completely eco-friendly.

Tessere by Friul Mosaic

Tessere by Friul Mosaic

Attesa, Traccia and Principio. These are the names of the new versions of Tessere, the Friul Mosaic collection, the result of the design and experience of Luisa Bocchietto.

The three new mosaic compositions complete the collection that already included Prodigio, Viaggio and Fermento. Mosaic art joins the ancient textile art in a collection of surfaces that are handcrafted from every point of view. TESSERE is the name inspired both by the activity of tessere precisely, and by the final product, made up of the tiles of a new mosaic.

The result of an in-depth study of fabrics and textures in their construction and formal composition, TESSERE is inspired by the art of weaving and refers to the history of Biella entrepreneurship, an area in which an important production of excellence has developed and the city of origin of the designer. It draws inspiration from the values of craftsmanship and pure creativity.

TESSERE is particularly representative for FRIUL MOSAIC also because it refers to the fundamental element of every mosaic, namely the tesserae, 10 mm thick and hand-cut with a hammer by expert craftsmen.
